Dr. Valerie Braunstein Philadelphia Psychologist

Dr. Braunstein  has deep roots in Philadelphia. She earned her secondary school diploma from The Baldwin School.  She went on to study human services, psychology, and sociology at Villanova University, where she graduated cum laude with departmental and university honors. She obtained a Masters of Arts and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Widener University’s Institute of Graduate Clinical Psychology

In her clinical work, Dr. Braunstein honed her diagnostic skills at the Philadelphia School District, and Widener’s Neuroassessment Center (NAC) where she administered and interpreted psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessments and consulted as part of a treatment team.  Dr. Braunstein gained clinical expertise with children and families at Child Guidance Resource Centers by conducting assessments, consulting with teachers, and providing weekly individual and family outpatient therapy sessions to children, adolescents, and their caregivers. While working at Devereux Whitlock, she implemented behavior management techniques and provided emotional support for children with autism spectrum disorders and their families in home and school settings. Dr. Braunstein provided specialized individual and group therapy for adults at Joseph J. Peters Institute’s Adult Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs, where she received direct training and co-led groups under James Pedigo, MD, a top psychiatrist in Philadelphia. Dr. Braunstein succssfully completed her postdoctoral training at an APA Accredited site, Community Council Health Systems Therapeutic Preschool and Coping Clinic, where she provided therapy to adults and children in a underserved population with a wide range of diagnoses.  She was then trained as a Trauma Psychologist at Children’s Crisis Treatment Center’s (CCTC) - Trauma Assistance and Sexual Trauma Treatment Programs. At CCTC, Dr. Braunstein obtained specialized experience and training in working with children and families in underserved populations who have experienced trauma, such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Recently, she completed a certification in mindfulness-based stress reduction.

After over a decade of rigorous clinical and academic training, Dr. Braunstein founded Philly Psychology, LLC in 2014. In her own practice, she set out to provide quality, personalized, research-based care to all of her clients. Always seeking to understand and incorporate new perspectives and techniques, she recently expanded the practice to include a team of multidisciplinary clinicians. Together they will be able to provide top-quality care to a wide-range of clients.

Dr. Braunstein is passionate about outreach and education. She has led trainings for teachers, clinicians, and staff within a therapeutic preschool setting and has presented at annual conferences. Dr. Braunstein is known for her warm and inviting approach when working with children, adolescents, and their caregivers.

Dr. Braunstein’s work has been published in a top-tier peer-reviewed journal and was presented at the Northeast Conference for Teachers of Psychology, the annual meeting of the New England Psychological Association, and the annual conference of the Delaware Psychological Association.
